Queenstown

Australian Holidays Ad

Queenstown in New Zealand, has been rightly named "The holiday and Adventure Capital of the World". There is no other place where you can do all of the Adrenaline pumping activities that are on offer in Queenstown. This is the home of bungy jumping and there are several breathtaking venues. You can jump from a high bridge into a practically bottomless chasm or from an even higher cable car suspended above a wild river far below or you can jump from the top of a gondola at the peak of a mountain. The New Zealander's invented the jet boat and you can now take a thrill ride through the wild rivers and inaccessible chasms where the walls are touching distance away and the river is very shallow. You can sail on an America’s Cup yacht on Lake Wakatipu and experience the thrills that only a fast maxi yacht can provide or you can ski or snowboard in the surrounding mountain resorts.

Queenstown Snow fields

Coronet Peak is the nearest of the ski resorts to Queenstown. It can be reached by a fully sealed road and the drive only takes about 20 minutes. The service area here has had a recent multi million dollar refit and there are plenty of lifts and many excellent runs. All standards are catered for and there is an excellent ski school. The Remarkables resort is about fourty five minutes drive from Queenstown along an alpine road that is a thrill ride in its own right. Once again there are plenty of lifts and great runs for all standards. Cardrona Alpine resort is a little further away, but well worth the trip. Being a little further into the mountains it has the most reliable snow coverage. Plenty of lifting capacity is available and the runs are fantastic. Treble Cone is the other major resort and it is world renowned. It will soon be accessed by a cable car from the bottom of the mountain which will save the current mountain drive to the resort. All of these ski resorts can be accessed by shuttle bus from Queenstown and Wanaka.

Activities in Queenstown

Queenstown is built on the hillsides surrounding Lake Wakatipu which ensures that nearly all Queenstown accommodation has views over the lake and the surrounding snow capped mountain ranges. This creates a magnificent, picture postcard vista from almost all of the many hotels, apartments, resorts and hostels that abound in the town. The central business district is full of great restaurants and cafes as well as excellent shopping boutiques and souvenir stores. The steamer wharf is home to the beautiful steamship "Earnslaw" which takes regular tours on the lake as well as a dinner cruise to Walter Peak Station.

Whether you are coming to Queenstown for a summer or winter holiday, you will find so much to do and the surrounding environment so scenically magnificent you will want to return to Queenstown time and time again.
